Mentoring and coaching

Coaching the management team

The concept of the Team Coach has been with us since ancient Greece, having evolved as a means of resolving and refocussing the internal dynamics of the team. The responsibilities and experiences of any Management Team are diverse and complex, however the requirements of that team are to form a clear and cohesive vision behind which every member of that organisation can stand and contribute.
The processes involved require the applications of psychology, sociology, business experience and plain common sense. The method of delivery can be intensive three day workshops or a series of half day programmes.
The aims of the programme are to form a consensus for, and commitment to, a common vision. The means by which the objectives are achieved are through the exploration of the mission of the team and the functions and responsibilities of its members. The team will also explore and agree on the values and practices with which the organisation will be associated, and how these values will be delivered.
Finally the team will develop a programme which will focus on what needs to be done and the role of each member in achieving the desired outcome, including agreement on performance measurements to track progress.
The facilitator will be an experienced individual with a record of operating at board level and with a sound knowledge of corporate governance.

Mentoring individual managers

As the management environment becomes more complex and confusing, bounded by rising corporate performance expectations and increasing compliance requirements, it is increasingly apparent that the needs of the individual manager are being neglected. No longer do organisations have the hierarchies and management systems which allow chosen individuals to be groomed over a period of time for increasing responsibilities. Today a manager may be expected to achieve a major step function in increased responsibility within a matter of days.
The Mentoring process has been developed to provide the individual with both a support function, passing on necessary knowledge and experience, and a guidance system, directing the individual towards the achievement of personal goals.
The process consists of a series of one to one meetings held over a twelve month period, although shorter intensive programmes are available. Each step in the process is aimed at enhancing the individuals natural capabilities leading to more effective and productive management.
The programme begins with an assessment of the individuals personal circumstances, career, achievements, experiences and skill base, and leads to the identification of ambitions and personal objectives. The next stage will be to agree and implement personal development objectives which may require the acquisition of new knowledge or skills. The majority of this work is carried out through one to one discussion, but further formal training may be appropriate.
